Some More Baltimore Attractions
Baltimore is a diverse city and is rich in culture and history. Baltimore is named after Cecil Calvert who had the title of Lord Baltimore and was granted the Maryland Colony from King Charles I. Fort McHenry is the place that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem the Star-Spangled Banner. There also been a lot of "firsts" in Baltimore including, the first umbrella factory was started in Baltimore. The first coal burning steam engine was used here in 1830 and here the first refrigerator was invented in 1803. There is plenty to see and do and Baltimore offers attractions for all ages.
You can visit the Lexington Market and browse the shops and a variety of different vendors. There are wonderful treats to taste including, roasted peanuts, peppermint puffs and deli sandwiches. You will also find steamed crabs, raw oysters and fresh delicious baked goods.
You might also enjoy Mt. Vernon Park and the Washington Monument. This Washington Monument isn't as imposing as the one in Washington, DC, but it is very pleasing to look at. The statue of Washington can be seen streets away. It is surrounded by a beautiful park and buildings that make you think you just entered a 19th century European city. There are fountains, flowers and statues for you to enjoy. There are benches scattered throughout the park for you to relax on and there are also plenty of places to have a picnic.
If you are into science and dinosaurs you should visit the Maryland Science Center. They have the largest scientifically reconstructed dinosaur, which is 73 feet long with a 33 foot neck and was discovered in China. This museum is a wonderful place for the family to spend a day learning and discovering different things through interactive displays.
If you love looking for unusual antiques you must visit Antique Row. You can find everything from 17th-century Chinese snuff bottles to ornate vases. You can spend hours just looking at all the shops and looking at little pieces of history. You can see light fixtures in the shape of flowers and beautiful pieces of furniture, jewelry and delicate articles of all kind. There is also wonderful bookstores and items of all kinds.
Another interesting place to visit is the Baltimore Museum of Industry. This is a wonderful place to relive the Industrial Revolution and it lets you step back into time to the early days of Baltimore. You can see everything from food canning to broadcasting. You can interact with technologies from the Industrial Revolution. You can walk through an 1886 bank building, and walk into 1910 Buting Pharmacy. You can walk alongthe Maryland Milestone Wall and learn about local innovations which touch the world, including the first disposable bottle cap and America's first umbrella company. This is a fascinating place to visit and to learn about our history.
